IS it art or has the world gone totally bananas? A new exhibition at Bury Art Gallery is certainly raising the eyebrows of some visitors, while others have been reaching for the smelling salts!
Richard Burns, gallery curator, admitted that some of the fruit put down when the show opened had gone off and was giving out quite a powerful whiff. However, a supply of fresh bananas has been brought in to freshen up the installation.
The piece is (aptly) entitled "Going Off" and is part of an exhibition of contemporary works under the title A Plea to Somewhere Else.
The show's concept is the universal feeling that life will be better in another place. Many of the exhibits examine this idea from the perspective of immigrants, asylum seekers or displaced peoples.
One of the featured artists is Stefan Gec, who has established a reputation in this country and abroad. One of his pieces illuminates the Irwell Sculpture Trail: the cast iron column called "Trinity" which adorns the Outwood Trail. For this show he has produced a computer-generated animation representing the Channel Tunnel's UK portal.
A range of artists contribute works to the show, from video and painting to photography and installations.
The exhibition runs until July 12 at the gallery in Moss Street, which is open from 10am to 5pm, Tuesday to Saturday.
