ONE man died and another iss fighting for his life in hospital following a horrific two-car motorway collision in Bury.
Police say a VW Passat driven by a 47-year-old man collided head-on with a BMW driven by a 29-year-old man just off the slip road of junction 1 of the M66 in Ramsbottom.
It is believed the Passat travelled down the slip-road in the wrong direction.
Fire crews and police were called to the scene just after midnighton Friday. Both men were cut free from the wreckage. The BMW driver died at the scene.
The 47-year-old was taken to Bury's Fairfield Hospital with multiple injuries. He remained in an critical condition in an intensive care unit.
Police said that the driver of the BMW was from Bury and the other driver from Radcliffe.
Police are investigating and parts of the sliproad and motorway were sealed off for two hours.
