Dewsbury Rams 12 Leigh Centurions 31 by Mike Hulme

THE Centurions moved a point clear at the top of National League One with a comfortable victory over bottom side Dewsbury.

But Leigh's victory could have come at a price with key hooker Paul Rowley picking up a suspected broken hand in the first half.

Having allowed reserve hooker John Hamilton to join Rochdale, Leigh now face the prospect of taking on their main title rivals, Salford, next weekend without a recognised number nine.

One who could fill in is Aussie half back Pat Weisner who was a major influence on yesterday's result.

Weisner dominated Leigh's attack and, with Neil Turley dropping out with a back problem, took over the kicking duties. He landed five from six shots and on the stroke of half time put over a monster field goal from five metres inside his own half to give Leigh a commanding 15-0 lead at the break.

After conceding 190 points in their previous three games, the Rams tightened up considerably and restricted Leigh to just five tries.

Two of those went to top try scorer Damian Munro who crossed twice in the first half to take his season's tally top 20. The first came courtesy of Weisner's bouncing kick and the second thanks to Willie Swann's long pass. Weisner added three goals and his long range field goal to make it 15-0 at the turn-round.

Leigh continued their dominance in the second half and they moved smoothly towards victory when John Duffy sent Swann powering under the posts and Weisner's long ball gave Alan Hadcroft a walk-in at the corner.

Dewsbury kept plugging away and were rewarded in the final quarter when full-back Nathan Batty picked up a loose ball and went 80 metres up the touchline for a fine solo effort and just before the end a quickly taken tap penalty gave Frank Watene the chance to plough under the posts from close in. Danny Wood added both conversions.
