A TEENAGER with autism is hoping to give something back for the support he has received over the years by participating in a ten-mile charity walk.

Zak Lewis, 17, of Peart Street, Burnley, who uses a communications board because he can't talk, wants to take part in the walk in aid of Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale Crossroads Caring for Carers.

The charity trek will take place from the Glory Pub, Loveclough, following a scenic route through the valley's countryside before landing back at the pub for a potato pie supper on Sunday, June 29.

Zak, who attends Blackburn College, has been cared for since being a toddler, with his carer Janet Wilkinson taking him to Burnley Boys Club every week.

Zak's mum, Melaine said: "We talk to Zak through facilitated communication through a communications board where he points to yes or no and is learning how to type in words.

"We know that Zak is keen to take part in the walk because he wants to give something back for all the care his has received over the years."

The family are hoping they can get funding later this year for a specialised computer which Zak will be able to learn to communicate through.

Melaine added: "We are hoping to apply for funding for a tablet computer which he will be able to use to tell us what he wants and what he thinks. The fact that Zak has a carer has helped him to be included in normal everyday things such as going to clubs and going out on trips with other people.

"As a family we feel Zak shouldn't be segregated, he should be included, which is what the carers have helped him achieve and we are thankful for that.

"We have already raised quite a lot of interest and are hoping people will support Zak and sponsor him."
