A BURNLEY man has spoken of his pride after he and his brother were awarded OBEs for helping victims during the Bali nightclub bombing.

Mark Wilson, 56, has been working in the Indonesian paradise island as honorary British consul alongside his brother Philip, 54, who is an assistant honorary consul.

The pair, who used to live in Lockyer Avenue, Burnley, have both been awarded OBEs in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

Mark, who has lived in Indonesia for 30 years, was installed as the first honorary British consul in December 2000 and Philip arrived in Bali last year.

The former Burnley Grammar School pupils, who also run the 'Cat and the Fiddle' restaurant in Bali, opened part of it up as a nerve centre for British volunteers after the bombing, which killed 202 people, including 26 Britons, last October.

Philip said: "We, along with a team of 64 people, worked flat out for the first two weeks following the bombing.

"The first thing we did after the bomb happened on that Sunday morning was to devise a plan of how we would deal with the situation.

"Mark's job was to liaise with the chief of police and the hospitals and I stayed at the office to run the rescue operation.

"We had to identify who was injured, make up lists of missing people, go round to all the hospitals, meet families coming to Bali, look after bodies to ensure they were being stored properly and go to all 500 hotels in Bali to check for missing people.

"This was all done as part of a team and we have been honoured on behalf of the whole team, we couldn't have done what we did without the help from everybody else."

Philip said since the bombing, Bali has not been the same and is suffering the effects it has had on the local economy.

He added: "Bali is such a beautiful place but people are still afraid to come here, it is very quiet.

"It is suffering immensely from the loss of tourism.

"We are trying our best to attract people back to the restaurant."

Their parents, John and Elsie who both live in Cliviger, said they are extremely proud of their sons.

Elsie said: "It is wonderful to have one member of the family honoured by the Queen but to have two members of the same family receive an OBE is just fantastic. We are both very proud of them." A Foreign Office spokesman said: "There are going to be special awards for six Britons including Mark and Philip who performed tireless service to help victims and their relatives after the Bali Bombing last October."
