YORK City boss Chris Brass is keen to offer two former Burnley stars a new home.

Ex-Clarets' defender Brass, who earlier this month became the youngest manager in the Football League at the age of 27, wants to sign experienced ex-skipper Steve Davis and goalkeeper Marlon Beresford.

Both players formed part of Stan Ternent's extensive summer clear-out at Turf Moor.

And Brass intends to pull out all the stops to persuade the duo - both also attracting the interest of Blackpool - to drop down two levels and become part of his own plans at Bootham Crescent.

Brass said: "Naturally, as an ex-player, I still keep one eye on the situation at Burnley and it's sad what has happened with Stan having to release so many players.

"I know most of the lads who were there and a few interest me. The ex-captain, Steve Davis, has been an absolute stalwart for Burnley and would be a no-risk signing .

"But I'm also in the hunt for a 'keeper and naturally, a player of Marlon Beresford's calibre interests me."

Like many rivals, and more experienced Nationwide managers, Brass may find money a stumbling block in any such negotiations.

If Ternent is forced to cut his cloth accordingly at Burnley, question marks must surely exist over whether a third division club, effectively now being run by a supporters' consortium, can match the players' demands.

But Brass remains bullish of the chances of pulling off a stunning double coup.

He added: "I don't want to insult anybody by making them an offer that is derogatory, but in the current climate footballers know they cannot earn the money they did previously.

"I feel I'm in a fortunate position because the power has now come back to the clubs and is putting managers back in control again."

Meanwhile, Walsall are the latest club to express an interest in ex-Claret defender Lee Briscoe.

The Saddlers join Preston, Norwich and Rotherham in the list of First Division clubs vying for the signature of the in-demand 27-year-old.
