BLACKBURN snooker star Andy Lancaster has failed in his attempt to rewrite the CIU record books.
For 31-year-old Andy of the Orchard WMC was on course to net a hat-trick of singles titles -- a unique feat -- however Mill Hill's George Holden had other ideas.
In front of a packed crowd at Audley WMC, George reaped revenge for last year's 3-0 final defeat to the same player with a gutsy 3-2 success.
After falling two frames behind, Andy knocked in a break of 53 to win the third and swiftly levelled the match at 2-2 to set up a tense deciding frame.
However, George kept his nerve and rattled in a 40 plus break to snatch the title from Andy's grasp.
George said: "It was a sweet victory particularly after the disappointment of last year. I know Andy was going for three-in-a-row, but there was no way I was going to stand aside and make life easy for him."
Last year, Andy helped his side record a unique 'clean-sweep' as they won the CIU league, team and doubles knockouts, along with his singles title.
While the Orchard have found life a little tougher this time around, having finished second in the league behind Hollins Liberal Club, Andy's individual form has remained spot on.
"I feel I have been playing pretty well this season and to get three-in-a-row would have been an extra special achievement," said the former Queen's Park player.
"George is a good player though and although I was confident going into the game I knew it was always going to be a tough ask."
