THE man who admitted killing law student Janet Murgatroyd has told a jury that his confession was untrue.
Andrew Greenwood said that he did not murder her but had convinced himself he had, which was why he told police he was to blame.
Questioned by his barrister, Andrew Edis, he said that he had never even met 20-year-old Janet, the daughter of a former Chorley FC chairman, whose battered and naked body was found floating in the River Ribble at Preston about 12 hours after she disappeared while walking home alone across the Penwortham Bridge.
Janet, who lived with her mother in Broad Oak Green, Penwortham, was a first year law student and part-time clerk with Lancashire Police when she was killed in the early hours of June 16, 1996.
Greenwood, 29, of Sephton Street, Lostock Hall, is on trial at Preston Crown Court where he has pleaded not guilty to murder.
