TRANSCO is to spend more than £120,000 replacing gas mains in Burnley town centre as part of a multi-million pound package of improvements to the region's gas supply system.
The gas pipeline company is spending £51 million this year replacing iron gas mains in the North West with plastic pipes which have a longer lifespan.
A total of 363km of iron pipeline will be replaced with much of the investment targeted on Lancashire towns.
Work in Burnley will start on July 1 and will see engineers replace 1km of gas pipe over a 15-week period.
Parker Lane, St James Street, Keirby Walk, Church Street, Ormerod Road and Shorey Bank will all be affected by the work.
Some sections of the new plastic main will be laid inside the existing iron gas main to reduce the amount of excavation required during the project.
Barriers will be put in place to protect pedestrians using the area.
Joe Butterworth, director of Transco North West, said: "The work we are doing will allow the people of Burnley to carry on taking gas for granted.
"We understand that people get frustrated by work carried out by utilities but the gas, electricity and water supplies that we rely on don't arrive in our homes by magic - there is a vast network of pipes, mains and cables in place to deliver them to us and we do need to carry out work to maintain them."
