AN AMERICAN GI has been granted his dying wish after having his ashes flown across the Atlantic to be buried at his old wartime air base on the Fylde.
During a special ceremony held on Tuesday, the ashes of former WW2 aircraft technician Sol Tauber were buried at his former base, 'Site Nine' Base Air Depot 2 (BAD2) or, as it is now known, the Land Registry, near to the present Warton Aerodrome.
From 1942 to 1945 Sol -- who was in his 80s -- was one of around 10,000 BAD2 soldiers based on-site who helped to assemble US fighter planes.
But, even after returning home to his native New Jersey at the end of the war, he never lost his love of the Fylde and as a member of ex-serviceman's association -- BAD2 -- he often made trips back to the area.
In his will, Sol -- who died last year -- left instructions with his two children, Ira and Eliza, for his ashes, along with those of his late wife Pauline, to be flown to England and buried at 'site nine'.
