A BEFRIENDING service for youngsters in Blackpool has been so successful that more volunteers are needed to meet the growing demand.
The borough's Independent Visitor Service needs more people to become friends to children looked after by the local authority.
Service co-ordinator Claire Fearn said visitors act as 'a favourite aunty or uncle' to children, for a couple of hours a fortnight.
"Whether it's a more mature person who might have experience and advice to pass on or a younger more energetic person who would enjoy doing sporty activities, it's such a shame that there are people out there who have time on their hands and would have lots to offer these children," she said.
"It's a genuine friendship that's built up. You help support and build up the child's confidence."
Volunteer Jackie Sawers of South Shore supported the call for more volunteers.
"I really enjoy being an independent visitor because I feel like I am giving very little of myself and getting a lot back in return. It is an extremely rewarding role," she said.
Anyone interested in becoming an independent visitor can contact Claire Fearn on 290049 (Mondays to Wednesdays).
