FRIDGE mountains could disappear by the end of the year, claims an East Lancashire euro-MP.
An EU regulation to reduce ozone-depleting gases by requiring the removal of CFC foam insulation from old fridges has created major problems for the UK, which did not have facilities to deal with the equipment.
This has resulted in the stockpiling of fridges across the North West at great cost to local councils.
But with recycling installations now in operation, the Environment Agency has told Liberal Democrat MEP Chris Davies that the backlog will be cleared within 6-12 months.
Mr Davies said: "Finally the wheels are turning and progress is being made in dealing with the backlog.
"Although this is not the end of the problem, it is certainly the beginning of the end."
