PENDLE'S first Asian Mayor, Coun Mohammad Iqbal, attended an audience with the president of Pakistan, General Parvaiz Musharaf, in London.

He joined 800 dignitaries at the Hilton Hotel, London, to hear an address from the president.

The event included a discussion on the theme of unity, which coincides with the mayor's theme of breaking down barriers.

Coun Iqbal was invited to attend the audience with the president because he is one of only two mayors in the country of Pakistan origin. He is pictured listening to a speech by the president.

The mayor said: "It's a great honour for myself and Pendle to be invited to this address, only one month into my tenure.

"I hope this meeting will put Pendle on the map.

"I'd like him to visit Pendle to see a multi-cultural community which is working in harmony in difficult times."

The Pakistan president is in the UK to meet Tony Blair and senior ministers before he travels to America to meet George Bush.
