BEAUTIFUL weather last Saturday saw the Mayor of Padiham, Coun Bob Lord, open St Leonard's Summer Fair. 7
The ground at the back of the church was packed with crowds of people enjoying the bargains and the fun. They were also there to witness the sponsored abseil down the church tower to raise funds for the restoration of the bells and tower.
First over the parapet was Julie Bradley, headteacher of St Leonard's Primary School.
She inched her way down and landed on her feet to thunderous applause.
Next down was the Rev Mark Jones followed by the church organist Emma Wakeley. Support from the parish of Worsthorne followed as the vicar, Rev Maurice Laycock, descended the tower.
A total of eight people did the abseil to raise money for the restoration.
The final total raised will be announced shortly. £17,000 has already been raised.
Streets will be closed to traffic
SCOTT Street on the Padiham/Burnley border is to be closed to traffic from 8am on Monday, July 7 until 8am on Friday, August 22.
