THE Mayor presented Hilda Calland with a birthday card from the Queen as she celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends.
Wigan Mayor, Councillor Wilf Brogan, his wife Mayoress Agnes, and more than 30 relatives and friends were at the special birthday bash for Hilda at Bedford Care Home in Leigh, where she has been a resident for the past four years.
Originally from Kidsgrove in Staffordshire, Hilda moved to her aunt's in Tyldesley in 1925 when she was 22, where she met Thomas Calland. They married two years later but sadly, Thomas died in 1965.
Former weaver Hilda regularly cycled five miles to work and enjoyed a nightly tot of whisky and daughter Marian revealed her mum always wanted to live to be 100.
At the birthday party Marian said: "It's wonderful that she's reached this milestone and great that a lot of family and friends are here to celebrate the special day and to see the Mayor presenting her with a card from the Queen."
Hilda has two daughters, three sons, 14 grandchildren, 24 grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
