A LEIGH shopper asks me when the town is going to get some new toilets in the town centre.

She says the only ones we have at present on the bus station are a disgrace with doors that don't lock, a lack of soap and and out of order hand driers.

My answer to that query would be when people start behaving less like vandals and treating what they have with respect.

A town only gets what its people deserve. We had some of the best kept and cleanest toilets possible at Bengal Street, but once attendants were lost the yobs moved in.

An attempt was later made to reopen them but again damage cost too much. The buildings still stand locked and bolted as a memorial to better days when those wanting to spend a penny didn't have to shuffle about crossed legged in to the nearest pub and buy a drink just to use their facilities, or if near enough rush home.

I'd love to see attendants reinstated and the blocks reopened because we really shouldn't be denied our basic need for conveniences. They're one necessity we can't do without.
