QUITE some time ago, in the early days of Forever Bury, the idea was mooted to form a corps of retired people with time on their hands to make themselves useful doing odd jobs around the club, which fell outside the remit of the regular club staff. It never came to anything, or did it?
Anyone who goes to Gigg Lane on a weekday (Fridays excepted) will probably find a small but dedicated band of volunteers, making a remarkable transformation to the cabin which has been presented to Forever Bury for conversion to "on site" offices at the ground.
The cabins exterior has yet to be tackled but the interior has had a make-over equal to the sort of transformation you get on those day-time TV shows where a couple of guys and a gal work wonders of modernisation.
In the cabin, the walls have been panelled, work top and storage areas installed, carpet laid and electric wiring laid on, all in the best tradition of "Three Strong Boys -- except in this case, "boys" is not the most apt description.
The cabin is obviously going to be a credit to Forever Bury when the work is completed and it will be an achievement all the more remarkable in that it will have been done without spending any money. Everything has been donated (i.e. scrounged from) local companies. Here's hoping that, when the season starts, they will come to Gigg Lane to see how their contribution has been used.
So what else is happening?
There is another car boot sale on the Gigg Lane forecourt on Sunday, July 6. If you want to book a pitch, ring Margaret on 0161 797 8048.
The open meeting is on Thursday, July 17, when members can put their awkward questions forward.
Then there is Robbie the Bobby. The close season for football has not meant any slowing down for him, in fact, he is busier than ever. Since Forever Bury took over responsibility for his activities, his popularity has blossomed and he is rapidly becoming recognised as the Bury town mascot as well as that for the football club.
Today he is at St Joseph's and St Bede's Primary School. Tomorrow he is at Radcliffe Hall School summer fair in the evening, at Bury Town Hall for the Greater Manchester Youth Games "Welcome Home" party, then on Sunday he is at Greenmount Primary School summer fair.
On Saturday, July 5, Robbie is at the Ramsbottom Cubs five-a-side football competition, followed by attendance at Lowercroft Primary School barbecue. On Sunday he is at Unsworth Primary School summer fair.
Among his future engagements are the fun run from the Bolholt Hotel, Walshaw, in aid of the Anthony Nolan Trust on Sunday, July 20, and the second annual Forever Bury Duck Race at Burrs Country Park on Sunday, August 24.
