A HISTORY of Preston Cricket Club has revealed the cricket connections of Preston North End.
The book's author Andrew Atkinson explains: "Former North End 1888 Invincibles legend Bob Holmes was assistant groundsman at the cricket team's West Cliff headquarters after he retired at Deepdale," said Andrew. "Bob was the last survivor of the Invincibles who died in his eighties."
The book tells of how North End, founded in 1888, started life as a cricket club in the 1860s. In 1863 a split in membership saw a splinter group which was to become Preston North End, and adopt the name in 1867.
Deepdale was leased in 1875, for what is described in archives as 'clown cricketers'.
And in 1876 an athletics group was formed, prior to a rugby club being founded - which was to become Preston Grasshoppers.
