WHITEFIELD ambulance station is to close and Greater Manchester Ambulance Service (GMAS) has announced the building will be sold off with a smaller replacement station built elsewhere in the town.
The closure forms part of a wide-ranging modernisation plan which will see the headquarters staff currently based in Whitefield moving to a state-of-the-art centralised call centre. GMAS this week approved an Outline Business Case to develop its entire estate.
Chief Executive, John Burnside, said: "Everything has improved in GMAS except our estate. We have new technology, new vehicles, new equipment and staff with new and extended skills.
"Staff consultation has already started, but much work is still to be done, including extensive public involvement."
It is hoped that if the planning process is successful, the changes will begin during 2005/6.
