YOUNG people are hoping to be the pride of the community.

Bury New Century Lions, a social and welfare club for those aged 18 to 35, has been launched.

The club, one of the first in the country, is a new organisation linked to the Lions International Movement, designed to fill a social gap for people who are no longer teenagers but not quite middle-aged.

Similar clubs in America, where they originated, have proved a huge success.

Alison Kershaw, leader of the Bury New Century Lions branch, said: "Now that the group has been officially established, it is up to the members of the club to take it forward and make it in to what they want it to be."

She added: "This club is designed to fit in to the busy lives of those in this age group and as such we have social gatherings rather than formal meetings. The main way of keeping in touch will be by phone, text or e-mail."

Club plans include a "Welcome Camp" at Burrs Country Park to which all new lion century branches in the country will be invited.

Said Alison: "This will take place sometime in August and is an opportunity for everyone to come along and find out what we are all about. There will a social event in the evening and those interested in staying should just bring their own tent.

"Bury New Century Lions is a great way of meeting new people up and down the country, improving your social life and helping the local community. New century branches are in the process of being established all over the country."
