AN INVESTIGATION was under way today after a blaze at a mill housing industrial units in Nelson.
Firefighters were called to the blaze at Throstle Nest Mill, off Leeds Road, at just after 2am today after a member of the public spotted smoke coming from the building.
Ten firefighters tackled the fire, thought to have started after a flammable liquid was poured through the doors of an empty unit.
The outer doors and a small area inside the unit were damaged in the fire and part of the building was smoke logged.
Fire Investigation teams were due to visit the scene today to establish the exact cause of the blaze and to try to find out who owns the unit.
Sub Officer Mark Woodward, of Nelson Fire Service, said it was fortunate the blaze had not spread further through the mill.
He added: "We were out to the scene very quickly thanks to a vigilant member of the public and had the fire under control in about 10-15 minutes.
"It was fortunate we were able to deal with it as quickly as we did or the whole place could have gone up as there are things like wooden staircases inside.
"It seems the fire started after a flammable liquid was poured through and lit though that will be one of the things were are investgating."
