A GATEWAY to Radcliffe could get a complete overhaul if property developers have their way.
Engleford Quality Homes has submitted a full planning application to build a four-storey complex of 28 apartments at the fork of Radcliffe New Road and Stand Lane.
David Monks, managing director of the Atherton-based firm, outlined the plans at a meeting of Radcliffe area board last week. He said: "We will provide a private development to satisfy the needs of all sectors of society ranging from single people and first-time buyers to families and retired couples.
"The traditionally built homes would have landscaped grouinds, off-street parking for 34 vehicles and be disabled friendly."
Mr Monks added that by bringing new residents to the area, local commerce and businesses would benefit and it would help rejuvenate the town centre.
The development would boast two ground-floor, one-bedroom apartments; six ground-floor, two-bedroom apartments; four second-floor, three-bedroom duplex apartments; eight first and second-floor two-bedroom apartments; six one-bedroom apartments on the first, second and third floors; and two one-bedroom penthouses. The homes will have electronic security entry systems. Prices will begin at £60,000.
Engleford, which built The Parklands private estate at Stoneclough, has already exchanged contracts to buy the site, which is currently occupied by a derelict building.
It is also in early negotiations with the New Life Church, which is looking at redevelopment.
If planning permission is granted, the apartments could be built within 12 months.
Area board chairman Councillor Barry Briggs said: "We would welcome the redevelopment of this site, particularly if it benefits the town."
