BUDDING architects at a Leyland school came out on top in a competition to design their dream classroom.

The winning 'Pink Princesses' team at Worden High, Westfield Drive, were one of three north west school pupils to enter the Broadway Malyan Architects pilot contest in Manchester.

Year nine pupils Gemma Snape, Lucy Freeman, Louise Pemberton and Jennie Olorenshaw submitted dozens of sketches depicting their ideal classroom, focusing on popular culture.

But their success was just one of many achievements for the school this week when it was awarded specialist sports college status after raising the £50,000 needed to submit the Government bid.

The school will now receive £100,000 toward a sports hall extension, new changing room facilities and upgrading community amenities. Extra cash will continue for the coming four years with about an extra £70,000 per year.

A similar sum is being handed to Brownedge St Mary's RC High School, Bamber Bridge, also designated a sports college.

It will get £150,000 to refurbish the changing rooms and create a new link building to the sports hall and £100,000 extra every year for the next seven years.

Both schools will open as colleges in September and will work closely with primary and secondary schools and share resources with the local community.
