LEIGH Harriers won second place in the Fourth Division 1 West of the Fourth National Young Athletes League at Preston on Sunday.

The Harriers U17 boys and girls scored heavily in the match with a series of first and second places, Amanda Fearnley winning the 3000m and 1500m, Emma Morris the 300m hurdles and 80m hurdles, Yasmin Foulds the 3000m B-race, Lizzy Heaton coming second in the B 200m and Louise Boardman second in the B 800m.

In the boys events Tom Boardman won the 1500m, Neil Pendlebury the B event. Alex Urmston was a winner in the 800m and the 1500 steeplechase. Tash Gallagher won both 100m and 400m. Mike Goddard, on a boiling hot day, won the 3000m, 800m B event and the 1500 steeplechase B event. Danny Crook and Andy Edwards won second places in the A and B high jump. Sean Mulligan was second in the B 100m, while Chris Lloyd won the B 200m.

Chris Johnson won valuable points in the shot, discus and long jump. In the U15s boys match Sean Mortford proved to be the star of the team winning the 100m and the long jump. Jason Carter and Tom Hender were both second in the A & B 800 metres. In the 3000m Tom Hender and Bob Hunt were second in the A & B races, while Carl Tennant was second in the B 1500m. In the 80m hurdles Danny Thompson was second, Paul Honiville and Mike Slater won second places in the shot putt.

In the U15s girls match Lauren Howarth won the 800m, Kellie Thompson first in the B event, while Chloe Brown was in good form in the javelin, discus and shot. Carla Mulligan in her first league match was second in the 100m. Rebecca Howarth, who came to the meeting after a tough walk in the morning as part of her Duke of Edinburgh Award, was third in the 1500 metres and second in the discus. Andrea Kay was second in the B 1500 metres. Danny Taylor won the 100m and Isaac McCann was second in the 1500m. In the girls U13s event Hannah Warburton was an easy winner in the 800m, Sophia Warterworth was second in the 70m hurdles and Grace Dolan was third in the 75 metres with Fay Horrocks second in the B event of the 150m. Kate Lynch won second place, and the Harriers finished a close second on the day, winning three league points which consolidated Leigh's mid table position in Division 1.
