A CAMPAIGN to save two threatened Wyre post offices is gathering momentum, with the local council and a parliamentary spokesman coming on board.

Last week, Wyre Borough Council gave its unanimous backing to a bid to oppose the closure of Lower Green and Great Carleton post offices.

Council leader, Cllr Alan Vincent, said after the meeting: "We shall do all we can for local residents to ensure Postal Services are maintained and that this course of action is not followed through. I am grateful to the Carleton & Breck Councillors for raising this issue."

Conservative parliamentary spokesman, Ben Wallace, also threw his weight behind the campaign. He said: "Post offices are the lifeblood of this community, but their future is under threat of closure or bankruptcy.

"A community's post office is vital to those who need it the most; the elderly and disadvantaged. We must do all we can to preserve our sub-post offices."

Mr Wallace says he believes the national programme of post office closures has come about because of the decision to end benefit payments over the counter.

He says that measures promised to help sub post offices remain viable have not been put in placer. He is planning to invite bosses to join a public meeting

As The Citizen revealed last week, the two post offices are threatened by closure. A consultation exercise is being run until July 23. Anyone wanting to voice their concerns over the closures can write to the Post Office's National Consultation Team, PO Box 641, St Albans, AL1 5XN.
