BRAVE teacher Tracey Varley faced her fears and launched herself from the top of a 35-foot tower.

The Year Seven form tutor at St Monica's RC High School in Prestwich took part in the stunt after one of her pupils won a competition to learn the skills of top stunt men and women.

But what many of her pupils did not know was that Miss Varley had a fear of being pushed off the edge. Or did they?

Miss Varley was nominated for the challenge by pupil Kristian Curwin-Jones who applied via the internet giving a reason why his school should benefit from the fun day and why he wanted to push Miss Varley from the top of a three-storey building!

Miss Varley, who is pictured bravely making the leap from the tower, said: "I still don't know why he nominated me, he is keeping it a secret. I think deep down he just wanted to miss lessons for the day. He is a lovely pupil though."

The 27-year-old admitted she was scared before taking the plunge but could not let down the cheering pupils who were waiting at the bottom of the metal tower.

She said: "I have a fear of edges, of being pushed off an edge, but that is what Kristian had to do, push me off. It was a good laugh and I think I took it in good spirit. I felt really proud of myself and pleased I had done it."

Kristian (12) and his schoolmates enjoyed a full day of activities with event organisers Stunt Camp, including fights with special shatter glass, sword fighting and all the tricks of the trade used in top films such as the Harry Potter movies.

And it was a memorable send-off for Miss Varley, who is leaving St Monica's at the end of term to get married and start a new life in Ireland.
