A 48 YEAR-OLD Darwen woman went to bed after having a few drinks and the next thing she knew she was standing by her car having crashed into a stationary vehicle in Blackburn Road.

Blackburn magistrates heard that Ann Pain had no recollection of leaving her home or driving her car, although she accepted it must have been her.

Pain, of Coniston Drive, pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen. She was fined £100 with £60 costs and disqualified from driving for 18 months.

Pat Bramley, prosecuting, said that when police arrived at the scene of the crash at 11.30 pm, Pain was clearly the worse for drink and she was arrested and taken to the police station.

When asked to provide a breath sample she replied in robust terms that she was going to do nothing of the kind, said Miss Bramley.

Richard Prew defending said his client was distraught to be appearing in court. Her husband of 29 years, who she described as her "rock" had died in October and she accepted she had been drinking too much since then.

On this particular evening she remembers going to bed and the next thing she remembers is being stood outside her car having had the accident, said Mr Prew.
