A NEW service to enable disabled and elderly people live more independent lives in Blackburn and Darwen has helped 300 people in its first three months.

Care Network is run by Blackburn with Darwen's Social Services and several voluntary and independent agencies.

It helps older people, people with disabilities and carers to access services including shopping, cleaning and laundry, gardening, decorating and home maintenance to boost their independence.

Care Network provides a free telephone helpdesk, managed by Age Concern. The helpdesk advice is free and home visits can also be arranged for people who need extra help to arrange or access the services.

The services are provided at a cost, dependent on the type and level of service required.

The project was launched in March and so far almost 300 calls have been made to the Care Network Helpdesk.

Edna Hopkins, of Blackburn, recently used the service when she needed maintenance work doing at her home.

She said: "I think the Care Network is wonderful. Everybody was kind to me when I needed help and the workman did a good job. I would certainly use the service again."

Nora Cole, from Darwen, wanted advice on support in her home. She said: "It's a brilliant service. All the people I have met have been very helpful."

Betty Parkinson, of Blackburn, called on Care Network to help her aunt with shopping. She said: "I am more than satisfied. Everybody I spoke to was constructive and helpful. They gave me lots of information to make the best choices for my aunt."
