POLICE and fire chiefs were today examining CCTV footage in a bid to trace suspected arsonists.
The investigation was launched into the attack after a blaze ripped through a row of shops in Nelson town centre.
Scotland Road and part of Market Street were cordoned off as firefighters from across East Lancashire battled to bring the blaze under control.
The fire was reported at 6.20am on Sunday.
Lancashire Fire and Rescue said 45 firefighters were deployed in six fire engines from Nelson, Colne and Burnley, to bring the fire under control.
Flames spread from the British Heart Foundation shop in Scotland Road to adjoining properties, including Harry Garlick's.
Assistant Divisional Officer Neville Earnshaw said: "We are fairly optimistic that the CCTV evidence will help us identify the people responsible for this.
"Officers have been examining the CCTV footage in a bid to gather more information and evidence.
"We have established that it was deliberate ignition after our specially trained fire dog found what appears to be flammable liquids."
He added: "We are still appealing for witnesses and would urge anybody who has any information to contact us or Crimestoppers."
Anybody with information should contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
