GREEN-FINGERED volunteers have been learning new skills while helping to transform the garden of an over 50s community centre.
The three-week project at Middlesex Avenue Over 50s Centre was undertaken by 10 volunteers working for the Prince's Trust Volunteers Programme in conjunction with Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service and Lancashire Police. PC Janet Eaves, who has been seconded to the project for a year from Pennine Division, has been co-ordinating the initiative.
She said: "The first part of the project involved ringing round local businesses to get donations such as soil and plants. After a week of this they managed to get enough materials to carry out two-weeks worth of hard graft on the overgrown garden.
"They completely transformed the garden while gaining valuable skills for their personal development to help get them into future training and education.
"It has also taught them how to meet deadlines which is necessary in many aspects of work. The volunteers have seen a different side to the police and I have seen a different side to youngsters through this project."
