FOR MORE than 30 years Kathleen Ashburner has helped Baxenden's senior citizens.

As the Baxenden Autumn Club's leader she has been nominated for our Outstanding Volunteer Award, part of our Pride of East Lancashire Campaign.

The club, which has run for more than 40 years, meets every Wednesday at Baxenden Conservative Club and arranges speakers, sing-songs and days out for members.

Kathleen, who still works with her husband at their Browfield Farm home in Back Lane, took charge in 1970.

She said: "When my husband and I moved to Baxenden in 1963 we were newcomers. It's really nice now to be able to walk around and everyone say hello. I've made a lot of friends.

"I'm surprised at the nomination as I don't like to be the centre of attention."

But Dorothy Jones, 62, who nominated Kathleen, says her work should be recognised. Dorothy's mother Alice Haworth, who has since died, attended the club for five years and loved every minute.

Dorothy said: "Mum used to go and it helps keep older people healthy in body and mind.

"Kathleen does everything without any reward. She remembers birthdays and those who are ill and arranges visits to all the housebound.

"She's always happy and carries out duties with great enthusiasm which is passed on to all who meet her."

Nominations for all 11 Pride of East Lancashire Awards must be received before September 30.
