LEIGH MP Andy Burnham will help to lead the fight against crime after he was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to Home Secretary David Blunkett.
Mr Burnham began his new role as PPS last week where he will help to support Mr Blunkett in his political work as Home Secretary. The job is unpaid but is seen as the first step onto the ministerial ladder.
The 33-year-old said he was privileged to be working with Mr Blunkett -- although he stressed the new job will not interfere with his duties as Leigh MP.
Mr Burnham told the Journal: "Since being elected, crime and an anti-social yob culture have been the main concerns of people in my constituency. I am delighted therefore to be working with David Blunkett in the fight against crime. These issues are the main concerns for people and there cannot be no more important work for today's society.
"It's a huge privilege to be working with David Blunkett. David has unbelievable character and achieved so much, so it will be a fantastic honour to work with him. It's a fantastic opportunity for me and the first step onto the ladder.
"My new role won't affect my main job as MP for Leigh. I love being the MP for Leigh and it remains my main priority to keep fighting for issues which concern local people."
