MORE misery lies ahead for residents, businesses and motorists with news that Wigan Road in Leigh is to close for 12 weeks.
And bridge strengthening work at nearby Nel Pan Lane will affect Traffic flow -- possibly at the same time.
Wigan Road will be closed at Siddeley Street for up to three months to enable United Utilities to install a storm overflow tank to prevent Westleigh Brook flooding in severe weather.
Recent sewer work caused the closure of another section of Wigan Road for eight weeks.
In October, temporary traffic lights will be installed at Nel Pan Lane Bridge during bridge strengthening work.
Now Leigh MP Andy Burnham is hoping to set up a meeting between local residents, businesses and United Utilities.
A spokesman for the Wigan Council's Engineering Services Dept said: "Both schemes are essential and unavoidable, and could overlap. Bridge works in Nel Pan Lane are scheduled for October and could last as long as four months. The bridge will remain open and temporary traffic lights will be installed to facilitate one-way traffic
flow.
"United Utilities intends to carry out sewer replacement in Wigan Road, near its junction with Siddeley Street, starting early in the New Year for a period of three months. Traffic will be diverted via Atherleigh Way.
"Motorists and residents will be given advance notice and more information nearer the time."
