RENTED properties are being checked out by Council watchdogs.
This week an accreditation scheme was launched in the Leigh area which, unlike those in other parts of
the country, will be independently audited by Wigan Council to make sure only the best properties are listed.
Properties will only be accredited if they meet certain minimum standards.
Good repair
They must be fit for occupation, in good repair and be properly managed by the landlord. These standards will apply to all tenanted properties, but in houses in multiple occupation, additional minimum requirements apply, notably fire precautions.
Cllr David Molyneux, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: "Flat or house hunters can have confidence in the scheme because it will be independently and rigorously checked. My advice is to look out for the accreditation mark and if you are in doubt contact either Housing Aid on 827822 or Environmental Health on 827100. They have lists of accredited landlords."
