A CELEBRATION of art and music in schools ended on a high note when more than 2,000 children joined in a mass sing at Ewood Park.

Pupils from schools across Blackburn with Darwen sang their hearts out at the event, which is now in its fourth year.

Before the huge choir took to the floor to perform, audiences watched pre-recorded dance and music performances from secondary school students across the borough on a giant screen.

There were also live performances from Manchester-based samba band Sambangra and Huddersfield's North Stars Steel Orchestra.

At lunchtime the pupils were kept entertained by Rock FM before warming up for the afternoon's big singing session.

All the songs that were picked were on a theme of nature and the seasons.

They also sang songs from a mini-musical called Billy No Buzz. The composer of the work, Niki Davies, listened in to their performance.

The Music and Arts Celebration was organised by the borough council's music service, which was launched in 2000 with external funding from the Music Standards Fund.

The service offers instrument tuition, free instrument loan and curriculum support to schools across the borough.

Angela Ball, music, arts and services manager, said: "The weather has been brilliant and the pupils have all played and sung really well - we have had a great time."
