LIKE many Darwen people, I totally agree with the views of R Davies (Letters, June 23), M Bottomley (Letters, June 24) and M Callaghan (Letters, June 25) on the unequal spending between Blackburn and Darwen.

Unfortunately, while Blackburn is still seeking city status the spending on Blackburn will continue at the expense of Darwen.

Even basic maintenance is not being carried out now and when it is, it is to a very poor standard, with insufficient grass cutting taking place, back streets becoming overgrown with weeds and blocked road gullies not being attended to, even when reported.

After the regeneration meeting at Derwent Hall it was reported (LET, June 19) that many people left the hall feeling disheartened despite council promises. This is not surprising as there would appear to be no money available and what there is, will be earmarked for Blackburn.

So once again, Darwen will have to be satisfied with a few hanging baskets on Market Street.
