ON Thursday, July 10, there were another seven tragic and unnecessary deaths following a crash on a British motorway.
As a result, television commentators and newspaper journalists were asking how such an horrific accident could have occurred.
For years, there have been a minimum average of 10 deaths and 107 serious injuries on our roads, every single day.
And what have the Government been doing about it?
Very little, except to construct humps, bumps, mini roundabouts, chicanes, bollards, footpath build-outs, incomplete cycle lanes, bus stops in the middle of the road, 20 and 30 mph areas, white paint, red paint, green paint -- not to mention, of course, hundreds and hundreds of speed cameras.
In other words, doing anything and everything except dealing with the driver!
And who's to blame for this fiasco apart from the Government? Look no further than the Driver Standards Agency, county councils, borough councils and road safety partnerships which have done very little to promote official driver education except to warble on about meaningless statistics and 'spin' -- and, please, don't mention the totally inappropriate 'Speed Awareness Courses.'
To put motorway education into prospective, anyone with police knowledge on motorway driving alone, will need, at least, one and a half hours and driving up to 70 mph, to mention everything he or she knows on motorway driving -- just once!
But what information have you received from any of the above-named organisations on motorway driving?
The silence is deafening. They have allowed most driver on to our roads with little more than just a few lessons on how to handle a vehicle.
Having just passed a driving test, there is nothing to stop you from driving on the motorway, immediately, alone and without any further tuition whatsoever.
What a wonderful system!
