CALLS are mounting to honour the Blackburn-born composer behind some of the TVs most recognisable theme tunes.
Barry Gray, who was born John Livesey Eccles in 1908, studied at Blackburn Cathedral and later wrote the theme tune for Thunderbirds – known for its catchphrases ‘Thunderbirds are go!’ and ‘FAB’.
He also composed the music for Stingray, Fireball XL5, Joe 90, and Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons.
His father, John Haworth Eccles, was a stationery traveller by profession, but both he and Barry’s mother Florence were both musically talented.
His musical education began at St Silas’ Primary School in Revidge from 1913, before he continued at Blackpool High School when the family moved.
Darwen Town Councillor Dave Smith has made the call to honour Barry, who died in 1984, after discovering his work online.
He said: “The series he worked on were iconic – everyone knows them – and it would be good for the borough to recognise him in this way. Hopefully it would also drum up some interest in the borough too.”
His thoughts have been echoed by Canon Andrew Hindley of Blackburn Cathedral.
He said: “Clearly Barry’s time at the cathedral had an effect on his musical life. We would be more than happy to support a blue plaque to commemorate his work whilst reinforcing his links with Blackburn in an appropriate place in the town.”
Film composer François Evans, who organised the Barry Gray Centenary Concert in 2008, said: “The campaign to have a blue plaque instated in Blackburn at the birthplace of Barry Gray, is highly appropriate.
“Gray was proud of his Northern roots. I offer the initiative my wholehearted support and pilgrimage.”
