BACUP Borough are on the verge of bringing in Chris Bennett on loan from Southport.

Manager Brent Peters was hoping to include the 21-year-old, who can play wide or at centre forward, in the squad for tonight's NWCL Division One home game against Squires Gate but the deal is unlikely to be completed before Borough's FA Cup tie at Bamber Bridge.

Peters is currently in regular contact with Sandgrounders boss Mick Walsh and Accrington Stanley manager John Coleman as he looks to strengthen his struggling squad.

Saturday's 2-1 home defeat to Glossop North End convinced Peters that he needs to ring the changes.

He said: "We are beating ourselves at the moment, nobody is playing us off the park.

"What concerns me is when we are going forward we link up well but when we lose the ball we have a limited number of players working back to regain possession.

"This is due to the fact that some of the players aren't as fit as they should be and missed pre-season.

"We're part-time and they will always have a reason for doing this but I've got to question whether they have the will and desire to play at the higher level.

"They can cheat themselves all they want, but they won't cheat me and the club, and I will bring new players in."

Tonight's game against Squires Gate, who are a place below Bacup in 18th, kicks off at 7.45pm.
