BEHIND every team, club, group or league there is an unsung hero.
Without a hard-working manager, committed coach, league organiser or founder, even someone who washes the kit, sport at grassroots level would simply not exist. Their work goes largely unnoticed but their efforts are vital and enable thousands of sportsmen and women, boys and girls to participate.
The Pride of East Lancashire Awards are for those people. And the Spirit of Sport award, sponsored by Burnley FC, is for an outstanding behind-the-scenes inspiration in the amateur sportsfield.
Trophies and honours have always been handed out for achievements on the pitch but this award honours those who seldom seek credit but work tirelessly. We want to hear about anyone you believe deserves the spotlight.
Alan Greenwood, secretary of the Accrington and District Boys' League, has no doubts about the part unsung heroes play.
He said: "If it wasn't for these people then there would be no sport at grassroots level. You don't often hear about those who put the nets up and collect the subs. Where would we be without them?"
It's not about winners -- it's about commitment and dedication. As with all awards, you can nominate yourself or someone else, with the winner receiving a £2,000 holiday and £1,000 cash.
Keeping the pyramid strong
BARRY Kilby, chairman of award sponsors Burnley Football Club, said: "If you look at sport as a pyramid then all those who devote time and energy to the local amateur scene are its strong foundation.
"Without the sterling work of the league organisers, the coaches, the groundsmen, all the backroom boys, you wouldn't be able to have the elite level of sport at the top of that pyramid.
"The people who we are looking for with the Spirit of Sport Award are very much the unsung heroes. They are tireless in their efforts and often get little or no reward, yet their devotion makes them carry on.
"The award is an opportunity to recognise the invaluable contribution these people make, not just to sport but to East Lancashire.
"The Pride of East Lancashire can be a celebration of all that is good about the area and Burnley FC is proud to be associated with the campaign."
