THE Lowry opens its new season with the classic British comedy Hobson's Choice - with an Asian twist.
This production of the Harold Brighouse play brings it up-to-date with modern day references, but retaining the comic touches of the original.
The play tells the story of Hari Hobson and his three daughters, who are fiercely independent but deep down love their flawed father.
And when his life hits the buffers and his business begins to suffer it's the family who save him, through harsh but fair means.
It is an imaginative move to set the play in a 21st Century Salford, with bangra music, video projection and a very original scene change.
Hari's eldest daughter Durga, played with a scheming but matriarchal air by Yasmin Wilde, is the thread through the play.
And its her relationship with lowly tailor Ali Mossop, begun with an hilarious courtship scene, that shakes the family to its foundations.
At the time the play was originally written the Suffragette movement was at its height and it was a blast at a stuffy middle class Britain.
But the desires of people to lead their own lives will forever be strong, ensuring this contemporary version will appeal to a modern audience.
Hobson's Choice at the Lowry, Salford Quays, until Saturday. Tel: 0870 787 5780
