A WIND farm company today blasted vandals who destroyed a £15,000 weather mast.
The 50-metre mast was gathering wind speed data for Scout Moor Wind Farm -- the controversial £50million scheme which aims to provide electricity to 51,000 homes in Rossendale and Rochdale.
It is the second time in just three months the weather mast on moorland between Edenfield and Whitworth has been attacked. Police are investigating the incidents, which are thought to be linked to each other.
On both occasions, vandals cut a steel guy-rope and left it to the wind to bring it down, but this time they also smashed delicate electrical equipment with rocks.
The joint venture between United Utilities and Peel Holdings hopes to provide green energy for the area. Richard Brewster, business development manager for Scout Moor Wind Farm, said: "This attack was an incredibly dangerous and stupid thing to do." The mast is now in the process of being removed.
