BURY-Pedal Sport members have been involved in several marathons of racing this season but none more intense than the situation at Goshen last weekend.
Over Saturday and Sunday no less than 125 heats were run and the Bury organisation triumphed as both meetings ran perfectly to the time schedule.
The 'icing on the cake' was that the required results were achieved and both the Northern league and the Northern Fours championships were secured.
In fact, Saturday's visit of the Scotia Club from Edinburgh was most satisfactory, as Bury teams won all three matches.
Firstly, the fifteen heat Northern Alliance British saw Bury in a "must win" situation, with a tough away match at Astley & Tyldesley still to come, but the racers rose to the challenge mangnificently to score 84 points to Scotia's 65, and the title was won with a match to spare.
Veteran John Whiting topped the scores in this one with 14+1 bonus point, Fred Rothwell 13+1, Steve Mann 11+3, Mark Rushby 11+1, Paul Dyson 11+1, Tom Doyle 8+3, Neil Howarth , (two ride maximum), Dave Morgan 8.
The second team Combination League came next and with three of the new 'summer fun' recruits in the team, Bury took a little bit of a gamble but it paid off handsomely.
All three scored points off the opposition, whilst Chris Parish actually won two of his three races. Bury -- 68, Scotia --51.
Steve Mann 15, Tom Doyle 14, Scott Jarman 11+1, (three ride maximum) Dave O'Callaghan 10+3; Chris Parrish 9, Michael Parrish 5+1, Ashley Simpson 4+1.
The first team match followed a very similar pattern with Bury in control all the way, starting with a 7-3 in the opening race, and building the lead steadily throughout the eighteen heats, in spite of a 20 point maximum by Scotia's Craig Newsome. Bury won 98-79.
Steve Muff 16+1, Paul Dyson 16+1, Mark Rushby 14, Neil Howarth 13+3, Scott Jarman 12+2; Dave Morgan 10, Fred Rothwell 9+3, John Whiting 8+2.
The later two matches doubled up for both Midland/North Regional and National League points.
Sunday's final round in the Northern Fours was most notable for the Goshen team taking the overall season long championship, with a fine victory with 48 points over Tameside 38 and Sheffield 33.
Paul Dyson 15+1, Fred Rothwell 15, Mark Rushby 11+1, Steve Muff 7+1.
The Bury team included two of the newcomers in their five, and make a valiant attempt tieing in second place.
Scotia 42, Bury 39, Hull 39, Ben Scranage 13, Steve Mann 13, Gary Hollingsworth 7+2, Will Collins 3, Chris Parrish 3.
Stockport (Bury C) also tracked two recruits and also enjoyed a good three way battle before just losing out.
Astley & Tyldesley 41, Heckmondwick 41, Stocktport (Bury C) 38.
John Whiting 12, Scott Jarman 11+2, Tom Doyle 11+1, Ashley Simpson 2, Michael Parrish 2.
The junior league saw a good turnout of locals with four in the Under 13 group. Will Collins two wins, two seconds, 14 pts, David Parrish 9, Mark Hollingsworth 9, Chris Dyson 6.
In the Under 16s, Tom Doyle scored 12, Chris Parrish 8, Ashley Simpson 5.
The Under 19 and combination groups were run together, and Ben Scranage was unbeaten with a fine 16pts. Scott Jarman dropped his only point to Ben 15, Steve Mann 9, Michael Parrish 4.
Tomorrow, Bury entertain Birmingham in second and first team matches for both Midland/North Regional and National League points. Second team 2pm, first team 3pm.
A hectic weekend pays off
handsomely
