THE Samaritans are celebrating their 50th birthday in November and have a range of events planned in Bury to mark the occasion.

The first is a cabaret evening at Elton Liberal Club on November 21. More fun nights out will continue into 2004.

Roger Gregson, director of Bury Samaritans, said: "As new director I would like to thank all our volunteers who ensure Bury Samaritans is available to everyone. It is our mission that the Samaritans are available 24-hours a day to provide confidential emotional support for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which may lead to suicide."

He added: "Our aim is for a society in which fewer people die by suicide, that people are able to explore their feelings and they are able to acknowledge and respect the feelings of others.

"Samaritans believe that people are stronger together and that we are there for everyone in emotional distress."

Bury Samaritans are always looking for new volunteers who should be people aged 18 and over who are non-judgmental and good listeners.

The next information day is being held tomorrow (Saturday Sep 13) at 11am at its headquarters at 13 Knowsley Street, Bury. For further details telephone 764 0055.
