AN ACCRINGTON charity has refused to accept the resignation of its chairman after he was alleged to have committed two indecent assaults.
Richard Day, chairman of the town's Shopmobility scheme, in Whalley Road, was alleged to have committed the offences against two disabled women.
But today it was business as usual as Mr Day turned up at the store.
Police have confirmed a 59-year-old man was arrrested and put on the sex offender's register after accepting a caution.
Sgt Bob Eaton, of Accrington police, said: "I can confirm that a man was cautioned on the advice of the CPS for two offences of indecent assault committed in December last year and January this year. A formal entry has been made on the sex offenders' register."
Inspector Phil Cottam, of Accrington police, said: "It's been a difficult inquiry for us to progress because of the condition of the people allegedly involved. At all times our inquiry has to take into account the effect it might have on those involved."
Mr Day said today: "I am taking legal advice at the moment and I have been advised to say nothing."
Eric Yates, a desk volunteer at Shopmobility, said: "He tendered his resignation to the committee and we all refused it."
