TODAY for the first time, police in East Lancashire have released details of where they will be setting up mobile speed camera traps for the week ahead.
The exclusive arrangement with the Lancashire Evening Telegraph will give you the locations for the following seven days every Saturday.
Police hope their open approach will dispel claims that they are 'sneaky' when running mobile speed camera traps.
And they said publishing the details in advance would hopefully encourage people to reduce their speed and prove that slowing people down and not generating cash from fines was their main priority.
The move was welcomed by campaigning organisation the RAC Foundation. Its executive director Edmund King said: "We certainly support this.
"It is more effective to get people to slow down because they know a camera is there, rather than have no idea, and get a ticket two weeks later."
Linda Sanderson, of the Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety, said: "National and international research has clearly shown that fixed and mobile speed cameras reduce the speed in which motorists travel and by doing so reduce the frequency of collisions and the number of deaths and injuries.
"The Minister of Transport announced earlier this year the results of the eight pilot schemes which have been operating for over two years.
"Speed cameras and enforcement showed that excessive speeding (exceeding the speed limit by more than 15mph) was virtually eliminated; the average speed dropped by around 10 per cent and in terms of casualties there was a 35 per cent reduction in the number of people killed and seriously injured at camera sites over the two-year trial.
"This equated to around 280 fewer killed or seriously injured. Enforcement cameras are just one tool in the process of improving road safety and our Partnership has done its utmost to ensure that the signing and conspicuousness of our enforcement sites is maintained at the highest level."
