BOSSES at supermarket chain Tesco have announced the new Burnley store will open in November.
The supermarket was granted planning permission to build on land off Centenary Way over a year ago and work is nearing completion. Work on the 6,000 sq ft development was delayed earlier this year when workers at the site thought they had discovered something of archeological and historical importance.
The discovery turned out to be arches from old coke ovens.
Burnley Council gave the go-ahead for the store in July 2001. Councillors, who were set to reject the development on the grounds the town could not support another major food outlet, changed their minds after hearing expert advice on the impact of the new store.
The schedule was discussed at a recent meeting of the Burnley and District Chamber of Trade where members were told the store would open its doors to the public on November 3.
Alterations have been made to the traffic flow system in Centenary Way, close to where British Telecom and Jewson once stood, and pedestrian crossings installed in the shadows of the town's £3million bus station.
The store and petrol filling station expects a £34million turnover and will create 300 full-time and part-time jobs. A 400-space car park will be included.
