A DRUNKEN man who beat up a pub boss in an "unprovoked and unexpected," attack, could be facing jail.

Peter James Heaton, 22, set upon victim William Starkie after he was refused a drink, even though it was past last orders, Burnley magistrates heard.

Mr Starkie, bar manager at the Great Marsden, Barkerhouse Road, Nelson, was left suffering bruises, in pain and was off work two weeks after the assault on February 15.

Heaton, of Park Avenue, Nelson, admitted assault causing actual bodily harm. He was bailed until October 8 for a pre-sentence report.

Neil White, prosecuting, told the court the defendant had asked Mr Starkie for a pint of lager, was drunk and was refused because it was 11.30pm.

He repeated his demands, was shouting, swearing and causing a scene. He was abusive, was asked to leave and did so.

Mr Starkie was behind the bar when he felt something on the left hand side of his face.

Mr White said Mr Starkie pushed the defendant away, a barmaid became entangled in the incident and Heaton carried on throwing punches.

John Rusius, defending, said Heaton, who had no violence on his record, had been drinking at home.

He had "seriously fallen out" with his then girlfriend, she left, and he had started taking alcohol.

When the defendant came to his senses he was very ashamed and very embarrassed by his behaviour.
