PROPOSALS for a six-metre banner sign at a motorway roundabout in Colne look set to be thrown out next week as it could 'distract' motorists.
A planned sign to advertise special sales events at Boundary Mill Stores near the roundabout at the end of the M65 will be decided by Pendle Council's Development Control Committee.
Road safety experts at Lancashire County Council have expressed concerns the sign could distract passing motorists.
The planned sign would be six metres long and one metre high, hung at a height of up to two metres at the south west side of the junction.
It would be hung at key times of the year to advertise specific events at the stores.
But the planning manager's report to councillors documents concerns from Lancashire County Council's environment directorate that the sign could present a 'considerable distraction' to motorists and recommends planning permission be refused.
It states: "Cars approaching the roundabout are slowing down but are still travelling at high speed.
"Unnecessary distraction from promotion signage is likely to lead to accidents."
The Development Control Committee meeting will be held at Nelson Town Hall on Monday at 7pm and members of the public are welcome to attend.
