BURY car users are being asked to think twice about how they make their journeys.
They are being urged to join with the rest of the UK and Europe in celebrating In Town Without My Car! day being staged throughout Greater Manchester next Monday (Sept 22).
The campaign aims to raise awareness of the benefits of less car dependent lifestyles and encourages people to consider healthier and more environmentally friendly ways of getting around.
Locally, Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) has worked with local authorities and the county's transport operators to arrange a series of events all designed to get people out of their cars and onto public transport for the day.
Councillor Roger Jones, chairman of Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority, said: "We always give In Town Without My Car! day our full backing as it encourages people to consider the effect that cars have on the quality of life in our towns and cities.
"There are several events taking place throughout Greater Manchester and I hope people will stop and think twice about the journeys they are making and whether there might be alternatives to using the car that will help cut down pollution and traffic."
Information about public transport is really easy to get hold of from the Authority's telephone information line on 0161-228 7811 and the GMPTE website at www.gmpte.com.
Coun Jones continued: "So, I would urge people to leave their cars behind and give it a go: they might be pleasantly surprised!"
Bus "daysaver" tickets will be made available to people who are willing to give up their cars to take a trip on the bus for the day.
